All institutions governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, also known as “HIPAA,” must train their workforce, including employees, volunteers, students or contractors supervised by University personnel that have access to protected health information (PHI) and its transmission. If you come in contact with PHI as part of your work, it is mandatory that you become familiar with the University’s policies and procedures for the handling of health information. All affected members of the workforce will be notified of their required training by their respective Privacy Liaison. HIPAA training is updated annually and must be completed annually.

If you work in a Covered Unit, or do not work in a Covered Unit and want to take HIPAA training, the HIPAA training for Covered Units has moved to the Environment, Health and Safety Compliance Portal.
